Irene Treloar for Chatham Borough Council

To My Fellow Chatham Borough Residents:

I am a full-time working mom, lawyer, Chatham-to-Manhattan commuter, and a New Jersey resident for most of my life. I grew up in Roseland and was fortunate to receive a quality public school education. After graduating from West Essex Regional High School, I earned my bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and my law degree from New York University School of Law. I now work as an attorney at Bloomberg L.P. focusing on intellectual property and technology licensing. I also work with various non-profit organizations to provide pro bono services to immigrants seeking to obtain U.S. citizenship.

My husband, who grew up in East Hanover, and I, met in law school and we instantly connected over our Jersey roots. Like so many of you who made the city-to-suburb migration, we moved from New York City to Hoboken, and then searched diligently for a place where we wanted to put down roots. Chatham was an appealing choice for its reasonable commute, great schools, and manageable taxes. Most of all, we fell in love with Chatham’s small-town charm. We chose Chatham Borough as our permanent home in 2013, and we now have two young children in the Chatham schools. Our long-term goal is to retire here.

I am running for Council because I plan to live here for the next 50 years, and I want to help Chatham build a beautiful, thriving future. At this time in particular, Chatham Borough is at an inflection point. We are in need of redeveloping both Post Office Plaza and River Road. I believe that with smart planning, we can make substantial and valuable improvements while preserving and enhancing those qualities that so many of us value – the commute, the schools, the (relatively) low taxes, and the small-town charm. We also have an opportunity to address senior living and making Chatham an affordable place to live for young people and after retirement.

Our communities are strongest when we all get involved. I currently serve on two town committees that are focused on planning for Chatham’s future - the Undergrounding Advisory Committee and the Communications & Technology Advisory Committee. The Undergrounding committee is investigating the feasibility of undergrounding our electric wires to improve the reliability of our electric service as well as save our trees from further butchering by JCP&L. The Communications & Technology committee is looking into modernizing our means of communicating vital information to our busy residents.

Every day I spend my time advising, problem-solving, negotiating, and consensus-building, in my work as an attorney and at home as the mom of two young children. I am eager to put these skills to work for our town.

Yours,

Irene Treloar

Like many of you, the members of Team Chatham (Treloar, Koronkiewicz, and Kobylarz) love Chatham Borough's small-town feel and quaint charm. We want to preserve those qualities, while also investing in "smart redevelopment" to keep up with the rising costs of providing municipal services. Team Chatham wants to attract economically sustainable businesses to our downtown and River Road. Not only will it ensure our town's economic sustainability for the coming years, it will beautify our downtown and bring many desirable new restaurants, shops and services within walking distance, increasing the value of your home.

Will you help support Team Chatham's vision?
